Program Description and Requirements

Continuous Sign-Up will run until September 30 of each year. Offers are automatically accepted provided the acreage and producer meet certain eligibility requirements. The per-acre rental rate may not exceed the Commodity Credit Corporation's maximum payment amount, but producers may elect to receive an amount less than the maximum payment rate.

Additional incentive payments based on sign up and the total cost of the conservation practices are also available from FSA.

The effective date of the contract is the first day of the month following the month of approval and the producer can defer the effective date for up to 6 months. Length of contracts are granted for 10 and not more than 15 years.

The following criteria must be met:

  1. Cropland that was planted or considered planted to an agricultural commodity two of the five most recent crop years;
  2. marginal pasture land that is suitable for use as a riparian buffer to be planted to trees.

The acreage must be eligible and suitable for any of the following practices: riparian buffers, filter strips, grassed waterways, shelter belts, field windbreaks, living snow fences, contour grass strips, salt tolerant vegetation, or shallow water areas for wildlife.

Land must have been owned or operated for at least 12 months prior to the close of this signup period.

Participants may be eligible to apply for additional cost-share assistance - up to 75% of the eligible cost of BMPs through the Virginia Agricultural BMP Cost-Share Program.

All programs, activities, and services of the conservation partnership are available to people on a nondiscriminatory basis regardless of race, color, national origin, religion, sex, age, physical ability, political affiliation, and marital or familial status. We are all equal opportunity employers.
