The site features:

  • Educational Programs
  • 850 acres of field, forest, and baldcypress swamp
  • frontage along the Chickahominy River. Owned by the Virginia Department of Forestry and the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries.

Activities

The Virginia Department of Forestry invites all educators to make use of this unique and valuable resource. Teachers and group leaders are welcome to schedule educational trips to the New Kent Forestry Center. Trips can be “on your own” with the teacher conducting his own class using our 850-acre outdoor classroom or, specific, SOL-correlated lessons can be taught by VDOF staff. Topics can be adapted to suit any age group and can be taught in an outdoor setting where students can learn by doing, feeling, seeing, hearing, and smelling. Many of these can be taught through engaging Project Learning Tree www.plt.org activities.

  • Hands-on investigations of Life Processes, Living Systems, and Resources science standards.
  • Interdisciplinary studies: The site has unique beauty and is rich in history.
  • Hiking: There are three trails, one has boardwalks through the swamp.
  • Learn about forest biotechnology. Loblolly pine, longleaf pine, and American chestnut genetic research have been growing on this site since the 1960’s.
  • Page Hutchinson, Project Learning Tree coordinator, and VDOF foresters can assist with field trip preparation in your school and post-field trip work.
  • We offer scout, 4-H, home school, and many other types of programs upon request.
