Virginia Certified Prescribed Burn Manager Course

January 21 - February 8

Free
× The scheduled Virginia Certified Prescribed Burn Manager Course (CBPMC) scheduled for September 23 – October 4, 2024 is rescheduled to January 21 – February 8, 2025. The Wildland Fire Learning Portal, which hosts the virtual Certified Prescribed Burn Manager’s Course (CPBMC), will be offline from mid-September to October as the system undergoes a major upgrade. Additionally, Virginia’s fall fire season runs from October 15-November 30.  Due to these two situations, we have decided to push the CPBMC to January 21-February 8, 2025. This will give students an extra week to complete the pre-work, virtual class work and final exam. We are sorry for any inconveniences this may cause.

Description: This course was developed to promote the use of prescribed fire in Virginia, as well as raise the knowledge and awareness of Virginia’s prescribed burn practitioners.  Students will gain an understanding of fire history and uses, burn planning and implementation, fire effects, and smoke management.  Certified prescribed burn managers can apply for an exemption to the 4pm Burning Law to complete specific types of burning during the restricted period February 15 to April 30.

Format: Online self-paced delivery, approximately 12 hours.  Students have the flexibility to work through the materials as their schedules allow.  Experienced cadre members will host virtual office hours on select dates where students can ask questions and engage in prescribed fire discussions.
