Collecting forest product production information is critical to sustaining Virginia’s forest resources and maintaining a prosperous forest industry. The Virginia Department of Forestry (DOF), in cooperation with the USDA Forest Service, collects timber production data via the Timber Products Output (TPO) Survey Program from a random sampling of Virginia sawmills, log exporters, and other primary forest product users.
Information from the TPO survey program is used to promote Virginia forest industries and products, as well as helping to maintain a sustainable forest resource. Specific mill information on production and capacity are only used to develop state totals. This information is also used to update a forest products database, which DOF utilizes to guide potential customers to forest product businesses, bolstering the overall economy of the Commonwealth.
