Ensuring a bright future for Virginia’s forests begins with educating our community members, young and old. The Virginia Department of Forestry (DOF) creates and uses a variety of conservation education resources for both children and adults – from publications and exhibits, to hands-on activities and workshops. Field staff deliver programming throughout the state to improve knowledge of forest ecosystems, forest resources, and forestry practices.

Getting children outdoors is key to helping them develop an appreciation for and awareness of the environment. Project Learning Tree® (PLT) supplies formal and non-formal PreK-12 educators with high-quality lesson plans and resources for nature-based learning. DOF collaborates with partners to offer adult education programs, including landowner workshops and technical demonstrations.

Virginia’s State Forest system encompasses forestland in all regions of the state, with vastly differing landscapes. State forests are managed for multiple objectives, including forest management demonstrations, wildlife habitat conservation, and outdoor recreation.

State forests provide excellent opportunities to get outdoors and explore Virginia’s forests. Whether you are interested in fishing, birdwatching, horseback riding, or just want to spend time in the woods, there is a Virginia State Forest that meets your needs.

All of Virginia’s State Forests are sustainably managed to provide the greatest benefits to Virginians; they are self-sustaining and do not receive taxpayer funding. However, you can support educational programs on your State Forests by donating a portion of your state tax refund to Virginia’s State Forests Fund.
